[Scene opens with Kyle underwater. He turns around and sees Amanda swimming toward him. Kyle closes his eyes as she gets close to him. He opens them, and Amanda is gone. Kyle wakes up… in his own bathtub in his room. It was just a dream.]
Voice-Over: It was my first dream. At least the first I could remember. My sub-conscious mind was weaving a tale of love and loss. Even though my memory contains no such stories. I wonder what it meant. Was it something I had already experienced? Or simply a vision of things to come. I wished to go back to that moment with Amanda. I wanted to see how it would end.
[Kyle goes back to sleep.]
[Nicole is showing Detective Breen Kyle’s pictures, with the strange markings that they now know to form the symbol on the security card from the previous episode. Stephen stands nearby. Kyle sits on the couch near them.]
Detective Breen: You’re sure he didn’t draw this after he saw the key card?
Nicole: No. I noticed these markings on his drawings well before.
Detective Breen: Kyle, why did you draw this in pieces?
Kyle: That’s how I saw it.
Nicole: It’s possible that fractured pieces of his past are starting to enter his consciousness. I’ve seen it before in patients who have trauma based amnesia.
Voice-Over: Everyone was concerned about the images coming from my head. I couldn’t explain them anymore than I could explain my dream about Amanda. My mind was doing things the rest of me didn’t understand.
[Lori comes down the stairs and tries to sneak past them. Josh sees him and notifies his parents of Lori’s whereabouts by speaking loudly.]
Josh: Where’re you going Lori?
Nicole: Uh... yea, where’re you going Lori?
Lori: The pool?
Nicole: You know, last time I checked, looking after Kyle actually meant looking after Kyle.
Lori: But, he’s busy.
Detective Breen: Actually, we’re done here… for now.
Nicole: Kyle, you want to go to the pool?
Lori: I’m the only girl in America who has to baby-sit a fully grown teenager.
Stephen: Uh... take your brother too. Because we have to go to the High school to register Kyle.
Josh: Uh… choice? What if I don’t want to go to the pool?
Stephen: Uh… maybe you don’t want to spend the rest of the day with your summer reading list either.
Josh: I’ll go get my stuff.
[In a dark, shady office, someone brings up s screen with a picture of the man who had been stalking Kyle in the previous episodes. According to the screen, the man’s name is Foss, Thomas. The screen moves from the screen picture of Tom Foss, to the actual man, sitting nervously in the chair. A man sitting behind the computer screen hands something for Tom to sign. ]
Man: Ten years of service to the company Tom. Sorry to see you go.
Tom: Time to move on.
Man: Is this your forwarding address?
Tom: [softly] yea.
Man: Good. The company likes to keep in touch. Especially now with Kurn still in my hand.
Tom: I’m sure you’ll track him down.
Man: Goes without a saying.
[Tom finished signing the papers and hands them back to the man. He gets up and turns to leave.]
Man: A friendly reminder. You know how aggressively we enforce these confidentiality agreements.
Man: One more thing. Your security card.
Tom: [Fumbling, but laughs a little] Course. [He hands him the card. It has the same symbol as the card that Detective Breen had taken a photo of.]
[At the pool, Kyle looks around at the people in their various swimwears, people jumping off dive boards, the usual activities at the pool.]
Lori: [handing out towels] Both of you stay at least 20 feet away from me at all times. Close enough so I can see you’re trouble. Far enough away, I can choose to ignore it.
Hillary: [from across the pool] Lori! Come on! Over here.
Lori: And don’t drown.
[Lori leaves in the direction of Hillary. Kyle stars after her retreating footsteps]
Josh: I’ll tell you, brother. Give a woman an ounce of power, and she’ll run right over you.
Kyle: Why is Amanda sitting up there?
[Amanda is sitting in the life guard’s post, looking over the pool.]
Josh: She’s a life guard.
Kyle: She guards life?
Josh: Sorta. She’ll jump in to save you if you can’t swim.
[Kyle looks at her, Amanda sees them and waves, Kyle waves back.]
[At the other end of the pool, Hillary is reading a magazine while talking to Lori.]
Hillary: He’s like seriously man-o-rexic. Eat a sandwich! [the girls giggle, Declan comes over]
Declan: Yo, Trager.
Lori: What’s up. [Closing her eyes, and looking away as if tanning and not caring at all about him. Declan walks away.]
Hillary: Are you still mad at him for lying? Or are we back to the whole, playing hard to get game?
Lori: Not a game, I’m over it. [Declan sits at a table, still looking at Lori]
Hillary: So you’re not secretly yearning that he’ll call you over.
Hillary: And you’re not quietly wishing that he was sitting here with you.
Lori: Not in the least.
Hillary: And somewhere deep in your sub-conscious, you have no desire to sleep with him at Preston’s party this Friday. Even though we both swore we wouldn’t go back to school with our virginity intact.
Lori: My virginity. Yours hasn’t been an issue for quite some time.
Hillary: Whatever…. Are you serious? You’re really over him.
Lori: I’m done with the whole friends with benefits things. It’s not fun anymore. We’re not really friends, which means we’re just benefits. And if I’m going to be giving benefits to anyone, it should mean something.
Hillary: Look who’d all protective over first time! You wanted to sleep with Declan for like ever.
Lori: I still do, but I’m not giving it to some guy whose idea of fun is crawling into my bedroom drunk, at three o’clock in the morning.
Hillary: Well, we’ll just have to find you another de-virginizing opportunity.
Hillary: Like yomminy-goodness over there.
[Lori looks over at who Hillary is referring to. It’s Kyle, sitting with Josh.]
Lori: Ew. Hillary!
Hillary: Fine. I’ll take him.
Lori: You are so not allowed to corrupt Kyle.
Hillary: Why not?
Lori: Because! It’s like… wrong!
[Lori closes her eyes and shudders. Kyle is sitting at a table with Josh]
Kyle: When do we swim?
Josh: We don’t come here to swim. We come here to scope babes. [He puts on a pair of dark shades]
Josh: You know, the ladies, hot mammas. Girls with C-cups.
[Josh looks over at a girl with pink polka-dot bikini coming out of the pool]
Josh: Like her! [The girl is squeezing water out of her hair.]Good lord of the ring!
Kyle: Is she a friend of yours?
Josh: Dude, a chick like that… doesn’t know I exist.
Kyle: So you won’t go talk to her.
Josh: Talk to her?! Are you nuts?
Kyle: So we come to the pool, but don’t swim. And we scope babes, but we don’t talk to them?
Josh: It’s a cruel world. I’m just living in it.
[The girl who Josh was eying walks by and waves at him.]
Josh: Did she just…? Don’t move.
[Josh gets up in a hurry after the girl. She goes into the girls’ locker room, and Josh walks over to Lori, preparing to strike a deal]
Josh: Lori, my favorite sister of all time.
Josh: Come on. Go into the bathroom…
Josh: Seriously. Go into the girls’ locker room. Get the name, and the number of the girl in the pink bikini with the…polka dots on her… what-nots.
Hillary: [Giggling] Her what-nots?
Lori: Forget it.
Josh: [taking off his shades] Look, you’re going to go in there, right now. Or I’m going to yell, “Lori Trager stuffs her bra” at the top of my lungs.
Lori: You are the devil.
[Josh takes a deep breath, ready to yell]
Lori: Fine, you little freak.
[Lori leaves to go into the locker room.]
[In a school office, Stephen and Nicole are trying to register Kyle]
Mr. Hooper: There’s no records, no history of school.
Nicole: As I explained, Kyle’s situation is unique.
Mr. Hooper: Certainly is.
Stephen: But he’s exceptionally bright.
Mr. Hooper: You’re requesting a one-on-one tutor. Well, that’s an expensive arrangement.
Nicole: Legally, you’re obligated to provide it.
Mr. Hooper: I know you, Mrs. Trager. Anything I say in our position to this, will be met with all the legal precedence…
Nicole: Now that you mention it, Mr. Hooper, I have done the research.
Mr. Hooper: Are you sure he wouldn’t be better suited for a Special Ed program?
Stephen: He’s not disabled.
Mr. Hooper: I’m sure. But, to be fair... High school can be very difficult experience even for the most adjusted students. If this boy is special, it may not be the easiest of transitions for him.
Stephen: I assume you’ll pass our request up to the administrative ladder. [Getting up in a fury]
Mr. Hooper: Of course.
Stephen: Good. [Nicole and Stephen leave the office]
[Back at the swimming pool, Kyle is walking away from his seat at the table where Josh left him.]
Josh: Did you find her?
Lori: There is one girl in there. Gorgeous, great body. She’s in the shower right now, naked.
Josh: That’s her!
Lori: That’s impossible. Josh, she’s a tech. There’s no way a girl that hot would come within a mile of you.
[Kyle has climbed the ladder to the diving board, and is getting ready to jump.]
Josh: Get back in there and find out her name.
Lori: It’s not her!
Josh: Quit messing around, Lori.
Lori: Quit bugging me Josh!
Josh: Lori Trager stuffs her bra!
[Kyle jumped into the water with a great splash.]
Lori: Josh Trager has wet dreams!!
Josh: You are so dead!
Hillary: You guys… where’s Kyle?
[They look around, Kyle’s gone. Kyle is underwater, looking around.]
Voice-Over: It felt just like my dream. And just like Josh said, she came to help me.
[Amada jumped into the water and is swimming toward Kyle. Kyle smiles at her in the water. Amanda grabs him and pulls him out of the water. A group of people gathered around]
Lori: Is he ok?
[Amanda lays Kyle on the floor, Kyle’s eyes are closed.]
Hillary: How long was he under?
Voice-Over: My whole body tensed and tingled. I suddenly felt a strange sort of pressure, good pressure.
[Amanda looks at Kyle strangely, gets up quickly and leaves.]
Josh: O ho! No way!
[Lori drops a towel on him]
Lori: Kyle! Cover up.
[People laughing at him as Kyle looks around in confusion.]
[Stephen and Nicole has just come home]
Stephen: That guy had a lot of nerve in playing Kyle didn’t belong there.
Nicole: Hooper’s not an educator; he’s a bureaucrat, worried about the bottom line.
Stephen: He was totally inappropriate.
Nicole: Well, he’s not subtle. That’s for sure. But he has a point. [Sees Josh] Hey, honey.
Josh: Houston, we have a problem.
Stephen: What’s up?
Josh: Funny you should ask.
[Stephen goes into Kyle’s room. Kyle is sitting in his bathtub. Stephen walks toward him, Kyle looks up.]
Stephen: Rough day? [Kyle doesn’t say anything] You wanna talk about what happened? At the pool?
Kyle: You mean…
Kyle: Everybody laughed at me.
Stephen: And you don’t know why?
Stephen: You never had an erection before?
Kyle: Not that I can remember.
Stephen: Ok then. [He grabs a chair, ready to have a talk with Kyle.]
Stephen: Well, first of all you have to understand that… what happened to you… was completely normal…. You just don’t typically want it to happen in public.
Kyle: Then it’s not normal.
Stephen: Eh… No, it is. It’s your body’s way of telling you how you feel. In fact, it’s a very honest, physical response.
Kyle: Then why should it be hidden?
Stephen: Well…. Uh… [Stephen is at a loss for words]
[Lori walks into the kitchen where Nicole is cleaning up.]
Lori: Poor dad, he has to explain the birds and the beasts to someone with quadruple his I. Q.
Nicole: Ah, he probably thought he was done with this part of his job already. I know I did.
Lori: You were good at it.
Nicole: You think?
Lori: I feel well informed. [The bell rings.]
Nicole: Well, I’m always available for brush-ups.
Lori: Trust me. There’s nothing to brush up for.
[Nicole answers the door, it’s Declan.]
Declan: Is Lori around?
Lori: Declan. Hi. Thanks mom.
Nicole: You’re welcome.
Lori: Come on.
[Declan steps into the house.]
Lori: So, you’re um. At my house.
Lori: In daylight, through the front door.
Declan: Who would have thought.
Declan: I didn’t see you leave the pool.
Lori: Yea, I had to bail.
Declan: Anyway… uh… Hillary said you’d be home.
Lori: We still haven’t covered the “why” part yet.
Declan: I thought you might want to go to Preston’s party on Friday.
Lori: Of course, everyone’s going.
Declan: I meant… um…with me.
Declan: All this back and forth, Trager. I’m tired of it. And I’m sorry for whatever I did to piss you off. I think it’s time we went out together. Really went out. But if you’re not into it…
Lori: No, I’m into it.
Declan: Good. So we’ll go.
Declan: Cool. [Declan starts for the door, then turns around.] O uh… do you want me to like…pick you up or something.
Lori: I can meet you there.
Declan: Sounds like a plan. Alright. Later, Trager.
Lori: Later. [Declan leaves.]
[Josh shows Kyle into his room.]
Josh: Ok, look. I’ve been on the other side of that talk. It ain’t pretty.
Kyle: He said when it happens again in front of people, I should think of something I don’t like.
Josh: [Taking out something from under his bed] Totally. I usually go with… zits and old people. You?
Josh: Hm. You should know… there are other ways to handle… our little problem. [He opens the box and shows him the Playpen magazine.] Ta-da.
Josh: No. Charlotte’s mine, dude. You are not ready for Charlotte. Meet, Ginger.
[Josh hands him another magazine. Kyle takes and flips through it, eyes wide with astonishment]
Kyle: What do I do with it?
Josh: You look at it.
Kyle: Like at the pool. Scope babes.
Josh: Except when you’re here alone, you can lock the door, and do… other things.
[The bell rings. Lori answers, it’s Amanda.]
Amanda: Is Kyle around? I feel horrible about what happened today.
Lori: Straight back, other side of the kitchen.
[Amanda opens the door into Kyle’s room. She sees the bathroom with blankets in it, the radio next to it. She walks over to the desk, where Kyle’s pictures of the forest are taped together so that the symbol is visible. Amanda sees another drawing underneath, she takes it out, it’s a drawing of her. One by one, she takes the drawings hidden by the forests drawing. They’re all drawings of her. Amanda picks up the pile of forest drawings to reveal a mass of drawings Kyle has made of Amanda. Amanda turns around to leave, and sees Kyle there.]
[Amanda sees Kyle holding the Playpen magazine.]
Amanda: I have to go. [She leaves in a hurry]
[Next morning, Josh is getting cereal, Lori is making toast.]
Josh: How would you like to get out of watching Kyle for a couple of hours everyday.
Lori: I’m listening.
Josh: Well, I can make it happen. In exchange for Ms. Pink Bikini’s digits.
Lori: Are you still on that?
Josh: Are you interested or not?
Lori: Of course.
Josh: Hi mom!
Nicole: What do you want?
Josh: So, Lori and I were thinking, maybe we shouldn’t bring Kyle to the pool today… I mean, not after yesterday.
Nicole: Because of the… incident?
Josh: No, I was more worried about the whole drowning thing.
Nicole: What drowning thing?
Josh: Kyle doesn’t know how to swim.
Nicole: O, that’s no reason why he should miss out on going to the pool. We should get him lessons.
Josh: That’s a great idea! They offer lessons down there. Couple of hours everyday, he’ll be swimming in no time.
[Lori and Josh give each other looks.]
[At the pool, Amanda is folding some towels.]
Lifeguard: Amanda, your next lesson’s here.
Amanda: Thanks. [Amanda turns around; she sees Kyle and Lori in the distance]
Kyle: She hates me.
Lori: Just don’t hump her leg and you’ll be fine.
[Kyle walks over to Amanda, and Lori goes over to the table where the Pink-Bikini girl is sitting, talking with her friends.]
Lori: Hi, you’re Ashley right?
Ashley: Yea, hi.
Lori: Hi, can I talk to you for a second?
[Lori walks out of the pool building, with a slip of paper in her hand where Hillary is waiting for her.]
Lori: Mission accomplished. Ditched responsibility, and paid of a debt all at once.
Hillary: You know, I’d happily give Kyle swimming lessons. I’d show him the breast stroke.
Lori: You’re seriously grossing me out.
Hillary: Ok. Prudee.
Lori: Please, I am so not a prude.
Hillary: Yea, just a virgin.
Lori: Yea, by very minor technicality. Besides, I decided you’re right about the sex thing.
Hillary: You’re kidding.
Lori: Well, it’s not like I’m waiting for true love, and the only reason I’ve held out this long is… he hasn’t done anything to deserve it but…if he’s finally stepping up, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t.
[At the pool, Amanda is teaching Kyle how to swim, from a safe distance.]
Amanda: So… cup your hand, and pull the water along with you.
[Kyle tries it, to get to Amanda, he pops out from the water, spraying water everywhere.]
Amanda: You have to float.
Amanda: Yea, you know?
[Kyle looks at her in confusion.]
Amanda: You don’t know… uh…[Amanda goes over the Kyle]
Amanda: Here…[Amanda holds Kyle up in the water] See, let the water hold you up.
[Kyle feels Amanda’s hand around his waist, he smiles a bit, then disappears as he realizes that he has his natural urges again.]
Kyle: Grapefruit! [Kyle escapes.]
[Josh is in his room folding some clothes. Someone knocks. Lori comes in a throws a piece of paper at Josh]
Lori: Her name is Ashley Redman, she’s your age, Catholic School. You better call now and get the humiliation over with.
Josh: Sweet, thanks.
[Lori leaves. Josh jumps onto the bed, picks up his phone and calls the number on the slip of paper.]
[Josh doesn’t speak, he turns off the phone.]
[Kyle is floating in the pool. ]
Voice-over: Buoyancy, strokes, breathing, it all made sense in theory. Now it was time to put it into practice.
[Kyle starts swimming, another male lifeguard is watching him. Amanda walks over to him carrying towels.]
Amanda: Where’d he go?
[The lifeguard points at Kyle, who is swimming like a natural in the water.]
Lifeguard: You must be a great teacher
[Amanda looks in disbelief at Kyle swimming toward her at a great pace. He pops out.]
[Amanda smiles at him, and Kyle jumps back into the water and swims away.]
[Kyle, now out of the water, picks up a towel to dry himself.]
Amanda: Are you sure you’ve never been swimming before?
Amanda: That wasn’t swimming, that was drowning. [Amanda looks down at Kyle’s belly] You don’t… you don’t have a belly button.
Amanda: Why not?
Kyle: I don’t know.
Amanda: And you still don’t remember anything about your life before?
Amanda: But you can jump off tall buildings and swim like an Olympic champion.
Kyle: Josh thinks I’m an alien.
Amanda: Or superman.
Kyle: You’re not angry anymore.
Amanda: I never was. I just…thought your drawings were kind of weird.
Amanda: There were a lot of me.
Kyle: I… I draw everything exactly how I see it in my head. You’re special… can’t seem to get you right.
Amanda: How come?
Kyle: Seems like there’s something missing.
Amanda: My mom’s going to be out tomorrow afternoon. Come by my house. I want to show you something.
[Stephen is tying his sneakers, Nicole comes in.]
Nicole: Hey, I spoke to Detective Breen again.
Stephen: Did he have anything new about the logo?
Nicole: Nothing. The logo doesn’t match any corporation on record. And they haven’t been able to decrypt the computerized strip on the keycard.
Stephen: Wow, must be some sophisticated security system, whatever it’s for.
Nicole: Oh, this worries me Stephen. We have no idea what Kyle might have witnessed.
Stephen: Well, you’re doing what you can to help him remember.
Nicole: Well, maybe now’s not the best time to send him to school.
Stephen: O, please tell me you’re not letting that vice-principal get to you.
Nicole: Well, he’s right. I want to protect Kyle. Not thrust him into another traumatizing experience.
Stephen: Don’t you think he should try to live like a normal teenage boy?
Nicole: I’d feel better if I believed he was normal.
[Tom Foss enters his apartment with a paper bag. He sees a man in his armchair, the same man who was talking to him when he left whatever company he was working for and gave up his security card.]
Tom: What are you doing here?
Man: Something’s been bothering me. I thought we should have a little chat…Your key card. I ran it through the system to deactivate it. The clearance code didn’t match your assignment.
Man: That’s what I said. Thought maybe it was a computer error. And then…I discovered that Kurn was cleared to that level. Interesting coincidence, him being missing and all. I thought it might be a piece of information you might find worth something. Something you want me to keep quiet.
Tom: Get out.
[The man in the armchair pulls out a folder gets up and hands it to Tom.]
Man: Think about it. I have a feeling you don’t want the company to know what you’ve been up to.
[Tom opens the folder, it’s the file of Kyle that has been taken from the Children’s Home in the pilot episode. Tom goes over to his safe, it has been opened.]
[Kyle is in Amanda’s house, in the living room where there’s a grand piano. Amanda walks in, carrying an art portfolio.]
Amanda: This is my dad’s. He was an artist too.
[She puts the portfolio on the piano and opens it up for Kyle to see.]
Amanda: Not for like a living, but…it was his thing.
Amanda: He died last year.
Kyle: He’s what’s missing.
[Amanda is on the verge of tears…]
Amanda: Anyways, take a look.
[Kyle walks over, and looks through the paintings.]
Kyle: He saw this in his head?
Amanda: Kind of. Artists are about drawing what you feel, not just what you see.
Kyle: How do you draw a feeling?
Amanda: It’s like piano.
[Amanda walks over and sits on the bench, she starts playing a single line of notes.]
Amanda: Right now I’m just playing notes. But artists are about putting your own self into something. Everything you feel.
[Kyle walks over and sits next to Amanda on the piano bench.]
Kyle: How do you feel?
Amanda: Just listen…
[Amanda adds a bass line to the line of notes she was playing before. She improvises a bit, the music speaks of melancholy, but beautifully. Kyle watches Amanda’s face as she plays.]
[Later, Kyle is in his room drawing.]
Voice-Over: I didn’t know I could make a picture of how I felt inside. But I really wanted to try.
[Kyle was using pastels to make his dots on the drawing, now he pulls over some paint. He opens a few of the bottles, puts his finger in the yellow jar, and adds paint onto his drawing.]
[Josh is pacing in his room, taking deep breaths. Finally, he takes the phone and dials. It rings once, and Ashley picks up.]
Ashley: Josh Trager?
Josh: Uh….. Hi?
Ashley: I saw the caller ID. Your sister said I would hear from you.
Josh: She did?
Ashley: I’m totally psyched.
Josh: You are?
Ashley: Are you going to Jeff Preston’s party tonight? I don’t know… but everyone goes, right?
Ashley: Awsome, so… see you there.
[Josh is amazed. In Lori’s room, Lori is getting ready for the party. She pulls out a drawer and takes out some condoms. Nicole comes in. Lori quickly puts it away.]
Nicole: Wardrobe crisis?
Lori: The usual.
Nicole: I love that red shirt you have.
Lori: I think I’ll go with the blue.
Nicole: Josh wants to go to the party. I know you have a date.
Lori: Date? Mom, so 80s.
Nicole: Ok. Whatever you want to call it. Anyways, I was going to say no, and then he went into this whole sales pitch about how it’s a rite of passage in the high school.
Lori: Well, he’s sort of right. But don’t worry, he’s chaperoned. And I’ll look out for him. Unless he embarrasses me, in which case I will kill him.
Nicole: Thank you, Lori. [Nicole turns to walk out, then turns around again.] So this Declan, is he a… good guy?
Lori: Mmm… most of the time. [Lori gives her mom a smile, Nicole smiles back and leaves. Lori goes back to her drawer, and puts some protective into her purse.]
[Josh knocks and enters Kyle’s room.]
Josh: Kyle, you’re coming to the party.
Kyle: I--- don’t like parties.
Josh: You have to come, everyone goes.
Kyle: And Amanda?
Kyle: Good, I have something for her.
Josh: Great! Bring it, get dressed.
[Kyle smiles brightly as Josh leaves. Kyle goes to his desk where there’s a new drawing of Amanda. He rolls it up.]
[Lori is getting ready to leave]
Lori: Bye, guys.
Josh: Bye, guys.
[Nicole and Stephen turn around to look at them.]
Kyle: Bye, guys.
Nicole: Kyle, you’re not going….
Stephen: Lori, see you at midnight. Kyle and Josh, 10 o’clock, or you won’t love to see 10:01.
Stephen: Go ahead, have a good time.
[Lori runs out the door, Kyle and Josh follows. Nicole looks are her husband in disbelief that he let Kyle go.]
[In Tom Foss’s apartment, Tom is sitting on the couch, waiting…Someone knocks on the door, Tom gets up to answer. It’s the man from Tom’s former company.]
Tom: Let’s get this over with.
Man: Thought you’d come around.
[The man walks into the room. Tom is behind him.]
Man: I underestimated you, Tom. Never thought the quiet guy from work would be so…
[Tom suddenly attacks him from the back. When the man fell to the ground, Tom takes a deep breath and straightens his shirt. ]
[At the party, there’s a banner that says, “Back to School! Life is Over!”. Lori, Josh and Kyle walks in. Lori looks around for her friends, Josh is trying to look cool, and Kyle follows them from behind.]
[Lori takes them into a room, take a look around and turns to Kyle and Josh.]
Lori: Remember the rules, no drinking, no puking, out of here by 9:45. I’ll be watching, and I will nark.
Josh: I don’t see Ashley.
Kyle: or Amanda.
Josh: Should have known… it was too good to be true. [then he sees Ashley coming.] Ho… there she is.
Ashley: Hi, Josh.
Josh: Ashley! Hey.
Ashley: I’m so glad you made it. I don’t know anyone here. Come one.
[Ashley grabs Josh’s hand and leads him into the crowd. Kyle stares around, still looking for Amanda, then he looks down at the rolled up drawing in his hand.]
Declan: I like your shirt.
Lori: Thanks. I was going for naughty and nice.
Declan: It’s working… Yo, Preston!
Preston: What’s up guys!
Lori: Great party.
Preston: Yea, it’d be better if my parents weren’t lurking. But I hid a bunch of beer around the property, so… help yourselves.
Declan: Thanks, man….[To Lori] Thirsty?
[Declan takes Lori’s hand and they leave.]
[Ashley takes Josh to a hot tub.]
Josh: Aw, sweet.
Ashley: I didn’t bring a suit.
Josh: Damn. Me neither. [Josh turns to leave. Ashley takes a step toward the tub and starts taking her top off.]
Josh: What cha doing?
Ashley: I don’t want to get my clothes wet…What are you doing?
Josh: [nervously] Checking for the hidden cameras…
Ashley: You’re funny.
Josh: [laughing nervously, taking off his shirt reluctantly] It’s my thing.
[Declan is kissing Lori.]
Declan: Right, sorry.
[Lori takes a sip from her cup.]
Lori: Why’re you sorry?
[She walks off… looking back to see if Declan’s following. He does. They go into some bushes. Declan looks around to see if anyone’s looking.]
[Kyle is sitting on a couch back inside. Hillary plops down next to him and tries her moves on him.]
Hillary: You’re hot.
Kyle: It’s warm outside.
Hillary: No, I mean hot, hot… like smokin’.
[Hillary starts groping Kyle’s face and chest. Outside, Josh and Ashley are both naked in the hot tub.]
Ashley: You’re definitely not a prude.
Josh: What she doesn’t know won’t hurt her.
Ashley: This is totally fun. When I saw you at the pool the other day, I was hoping you’d come talk to me.
Josh: You were?
Ashley: I thought you were cute.
Josh: You did?
Ashley: Well, there aren’t that many boys at my school to compare you to. But, yea.
[Ashley moves closer to Josh. Josh smirks. Suddenly, Preson’s parents comes.]
Mr. Preston: What the hell is going on?
Josh: Mr. and Mrs. Preston?
Mr. Preston: Get out of there, right now.
Mrs. Preston: [To Ashley] Honey, come on.
[Mr. Preston helps Ashley out of the tub and drapes a towel over her. Mrs. Preston leads her away.]
Mr. Preston: Young man…
Josh: I can’t! Zits… old people…Zits! Old people!
Mr. Preston: I’m going to count to three. One… Two…
Josh: GRAPEFRUIT!! [Josh rushes out of the tub and runs away.]
[In the bushes, Lori and Declan are putting their clothes back on. Lori seems disappointed.]
Lori: Yea…[Fixing her hair]
Declan: Um… Was that your uh…
Lori: Yea… yours?
Declan: No. I mean… I haven’t done it a ton… but… it wasn’t my first.
[Lori isn’t all to excited about her first time.]
Declan: It gets better…
Lori: Well, I’d better get back to the party.
[Lori leaves, Declan looks around in the bushes, uncomfortable.]
[Back in the house, Hillary is laying across Kyle’s lap. Kyle is staring at Hillary, holding his picture of Amanda in his hand away from her.]
Hillary: Every one thinks I’m a slut just because of the 8th grade field trip to Tacoma. But I just wanted a sweet guy to cuddle with. Is that so wrong? You feel nice.
Voice-over: Hillary made my body feel good. But just like the girls in Josh’s magazines. Something didn’t feel right. There was a piece missing.
[Lori comes back, and sees Hillary all over Kyle.]
Lori: Hillary, get off of him.
Hillary: Go away.
[Lori pulls Hillary off Kyle]
Lori: God, you slut.
Lori: I told you to leave him alone!
Hillary: What are you so worried I’ll do?
Lori: Gee, I wonder.
Hillary: Do you really think I’m such a super skeeze? You’ve held on to one thing and you act like the freaking purity police.
Lori: That’s not what I’m…
Hillary: I’m tired of it! Poor Declan, I never should have told him to ask you out.
[Lori turns around and faces Declan]
Hillary: I told him you weren’t going to put out anymore unless he stepped up.
Declan: De…She didn’t say it like that…That--that is not why I…
Lori: Don’t, talk to me.
[Lori steps away from Declan and Hillary.]
Hillary: Ho… you two totally did it, didn’t you.
[Lori is about to cry]
Hillary: Who knew, after all this time, you’d be so easy.
[Hillary walks away, leaving Declan and Lori facing each other. Declan looks at Lori, wanting to comfort her. Preston comes over and pulls him away.]
Preston: Declan, man. Dude, you gotta come check this out. It’s hilarious. [Preston pulls Declan through the crowd, away from Lori.]
[Lori starts sobbing quietly, and sits down next to Kyle. Kyle puts his hand on her shoulder to comfort her.]
[At home, Nicole is on her laptop in the living room, Stephen comes into]
Stephen: Still on the non-speaking part of the evening?
Nicole: how could you let him go to that party?
Stephen: Well, we let Josh go and he’s younger.
Nicole: Well, I’m not worried about Josh being able to handle himself.
Stephen: And I’m not worried about Kyle.
Nicole: But he is…
Stephen: Listen, Nicole…You need to ease up on the reins, just a little bit. Kyle needs to get out there and experience life. He needs to have it knock him around a little bit.
Nicole: We took him in so we could protect him.
Stephen: Not by keeping him in a bubble…
[Nicole shakes her head and goes back to her laptop.]
Stephen: Alright, look. I realize that he’s your patient.
Nicole: Yes. But, it’s hard for me to stay clinical about him.
Stephen: Of course it is. So let’s handle him like we handle Josh and Lori. The reason they’re well adjusted is because we treat them with respect. We let them go out and make their mistakes, and they know we’re here when they need us. We need to give Kyle the same chance.
Nicole: I hope you’re right.
Stephen: It had to happen some time…
[Nicole and Stephen are reconciled]
[Back at the party. Kyle is walking around again.]
Voice-Over: Everyone had arrived at the party with expectations. None, had been met the way we’d hoped.
[Kyle finds Josh sitting next to the toilet in the bathroom.]
Kyle: What are you doing?
[Kyle looks out the bathroom to see who Josh is hiding from.]
Kyle: From what?
[Kyle is contemplating on what Josh had said, Hillary rushes in.]
Hillary: Everybody out.
[Hillary starts throwing up into the toilet. Josh covers his face/nose with his shirt and is shrinking away from the toilet but doesn’t move. Kyle looks at everyone in confusion.]
[Declan is playing billiards. He sees Lori in the distance, sitting on the couch, alone, sad and disappointed. Preston comes along. ]
Preston: So, finally tapped that huh?
Declan: No, man. She’s not like that.
[Declan leaves. Josh is finally out of the bathroom and takes the popcorn bowl. Kyle is with him. Josh looks over and sees Amanda coming in. Kyle looks and sees as well.]
Voice-Over: Seeing Amanda, I realized something. I had been struggling to understand what my mind and body were trying to tell me. And right then, I knew what it was. Everything was working together, sending a message to my heart.
[Kyle walks quickly over to Amanda, smiling.]
[A guy walks in.]
Charlie: Amanda! There you are.
[Charlie and Amanda kiss…]
Charlie: I’ve been waiting for you.
[Kyle was going to give Amanda his drawing, but now he hides it behind his back.]
Amanda: O, Charlie! This is my neighbor Kyle. Kyle, this is Charlie, my boyfriend.
Charlie: Hey, nice to meet you, man.
Voice-Over: And now my heart was sending a message to the rest of my body.
Charlie: So, you guys live across the street from each other, huh?
Amanda: Uh. Next door, yea. He just moved in.
[Josh and Lori sees what’s happening. Both are shaking their heads, sad and disappointed at how the events of the evening had turned out.]
[Kyle walks out to the pool. ]
Voice-Over: Life is a puzzle. Every piece fits together to create who we are, what we do, how we feel. Every experience shapes us into who we eventually will become.
[Stephen is sleeping on the couch, waiting for the kids to come out. Nicole is puzzling over Kyle’s drawings of the forest. ]
Voice-Over: I began as a blank slate. Maybe my hidden memories tell a different story. Maybe I hold the key to a greater mystery than that of my past.
[Back to Kyle standing on the edge of the pool. Lori and Josh come out and stand by his side.]
Voice-over: I’ve been so eager to remember, to grow up and experience life, like Lori and Josh. But in that one moment, I wish I could go back to that blank slate.
[Kyle throws his drawing gently into the water and watches it float away.]
Voice-Over: When life was, easier. I think they wished for it too.
Kyle: Let’s go home?
[Lori and Josh leave, Kyle takes one last look at his drawing of Amanda, now uncurled and floating in the pool, and follows Josh and Lori.]
